Get Lit – Best of November 2024

Hi, folks!

Books

There is a lot of great literature out there, and sometimes I struggle with choosing what to read. This month I devoured Spare Parts: The Story of Medicine through the History of Transplant. Wow! Big takeaway: WE CANNOT JUDGE people of the past based on the values of the present.

Appalling and shocking experiments were performed on animals, children, the impoverished, and even the wealthy. I was both repulsed and riveted (also, now I know the history of why Fantine from Victor Hugo’s Les Mis was able to sell her teeth). There are so many things we take for granted, this book reminded me to be grateful, and just in time for Thanksgiving.

I particularly enjoyed the first chapter on nose transplants and prosthetics! Apparently it was common to need a new nose – sometimes wax, sometimes bronze/gold/copper. Not the greatest read if you’re squeamish, but worth it if you want to know how we moved from blood letting to kidney transplants. Truly fascinating and enlightening – spoiler, the caste system spans continents and plays a huge role.

Beats

Times are a changin’ Bob Dylan. I appreciate the sentiments, though this music is not my style at all. Still rocking out to country. Haven’t found a good hip hop station down in Florida yet. Got any good recommendations for me?

Barbells

Been doing negatives recently. Nothing better than negatives to get your muscles feeling sore. I appreciate Jeff’s physique because you can see every muscle working under his skin. Pretty amazing what the human body is capable of accomplishing.

Peace and love,

Kit
