Howdy ho, friends!
Books
There’s a reason Jews read the same chapters in the Old Testament year after year, the lessons are invaluable and need to be repeated. Some aren’t religious, or observant though. And so I HIGHLY recommend The Daily Stoic by Ryan Holiday and Greg Hanselman. It is one of those books you should keep on your night stand and read every day. The lessons were timeless and reflected truisms presented generations earlier by Jewish rabbis in Ethics of Our Fathers (Pirkei Avot).
Simply put, our goal on this earth is to do the work without letting distractions pull us from our task. Distractions can be anything from emotions like anger, which goad us to tell the same story over and over thereby wasting valuable time, or scrolling for hours on social media or Netflix. Some of us create distractions by participating in relationships that do not help/allow us to fulfil our mission, others bury ourselves in tasks and busyness. These are all distractions.
I am internalizing and reinforcing this message as I move forward. I have to do MY work. No one else’s. I have to be a good person, this requires restraint and reason.
What’s YOUR work? How do you distract yourself?
Beats
On another note (get it?!), I got to participate in my own slice of history when I saw Nestor Torres perform in Neo Dance Story. The Latin Flautist was amazing! And we got an encore! I don’t have footage of the show, but I am so glad I went.
Barbells
I’ve been seeing the “Get in Shape for the Summer” advertisements recently. It’s that time of the year, I suppose. Personally, it’s easier to just keep the momentum going than to start and stop and start again. That’s usually why I switch from barbells to kettlebells to walking/running and then back to barbells. It’s about consistently moving in ways that make you feel good. Commit to 20 minutes every day, no matter what it is. And if you need to break it up into 5 minutes four times a day, do that. If you’re not sure how, check out my workbook Healthy Life, Happy Life.
Peace and love,
Kit
