Let’s review this month!
Books
I read Empire of the Summer Moon: Quanah Parker and the Rise and Fall of the Comanches, the Most Powerful Indian Tribe in American History. The author S.C. Gwynne spared no details in this riveting history of the Plains Indians. On one hand, life as a native tribe was brutal. In addition to the harsh conditions of the natural world, the Comanches engaged in practices that our society shuns: surrender was unknown to them, they fought to the death; taking captives, gang rape, and torture were standard; slavery and subjugation of women was commonplace. On the other hand, the structure of society was clear, each person had a role. The culture was colorful, vibrant, and they knew what they were fighting for.
The book was fascinating and heartbreaking.
Also of note is Tim Grover’s book, Winning. It serves as a testament to excellence and is an inspiration for anyone who lives to win. He offers the distinction that “fear is about playing to win. Doubt is about playing to not lose. Fear is pressure. Doubt is panic. Fear says I can do this. Doubt says I’m fucked.” I thought of the Comanche, the Rangers, and our mentality today. To what extent are we still living according to precepts of winning at all cost? And is that the best way to live? For longevity? For quality of life? For our future? What do you think?

Sometimes a little variation is all you need to revamp your routine. This month, choose one exercise and do it differently. Instead of stepping up straight, step to the side. Instead of back squats, try front squats. Usually swim in a pool? This month try open water. Let me know how it goes.
Peace and love,
