Get Lit – Best of January 2026

Let’s start the new year off right!

Books

I have a 2000 page anthology of short stories that I intend to read this year. I enjoyed The Company of Wolves by Angela Carter (and hope to watch the adapted movie—trailer here). This was a haunting re-envisioning of Little Red Riding Hood. It forced me to consider the very real Beast Within and how we manifest our lives by ignoring our better judgement. Is this defeat, resignation, or an actualization of unconscious dreams that we are too fearful of consciously committing to?

Relatedly is a piercing quotation from Sonny’s Blues by the mighty James Baldwin. The story tells of two brothers, redemption after addiction, repentance, and renewal. This excerpt reflects the brothers’ conversation after Sonny is released from jail and trying to find himself again.

“‘No, there’s no way not to suffer. But you try all kinds of ways to keep from drowning in it, to keep on top of it…why do people suffer? Maybe it’s better to do something to give it a reason, any reason…’

‘I don’t want to see you — die — trying not to suffer.'”

How many ways do we create circumstances for our selves to suffer by ignoring the inner voice?

Beats

lil021g on Instagram has a banger of resistance. Rap is her language. I love this track! Volume up and stand with Iran.

Barbells

No barbells this month. I found a ballet studio! Dance is healing. What is your preferred movement?

Peace and love,

Kit
