Hi friends!
Books
I am on page 800 of a 2000 page short story anthology. There are multiple works in the tome that prompt me to consider the different paths one can take in life, but Zora Neale Hurston’s Sweat stands out.
The story follows Delia, a washer woman whose beauty is ravaged by her abusive and adulterous husband. Hurston’s writing created such tension that I had to pause in my reading because I was scared to know the ending—scared that Delia would lose the battle. I’m not going to tell you how it ends. You must read it for yourself.
The symbolism was spectacular. The writing was captivating. Hurston explores the concept of justice and presents the reality that while some people might talk about helping a fellow in need, they often don’t take meaningful action, leaving the helpless to suffer demons alone and in the dark.
This month, choose a cause and give your help to those in need – whether time, money, or human connection. There is no shortage of people who need support.
Beats
Speaking of demons, Tigran Hamasyan’s Yes Siretsi featuring Golshifteh Farahani is a painfully beautiful song about a life unlived.
Barbells
As I get older, and deal with niggling injuries, I am learning to appreciate the seasons of life. 15 years ago, I was a competitor. I jumped at the chance to prove my prowess and find ways to impress others. These days, I do what I love and I do it for myself. Ballet, bike rides, barbells, and long walks by the lakes. I’m not as regimented as I used to be, but I continue to enjoy movement in all forms!
What is an activity you would like to do, but haven’t tried yet?
Peace and love,
Kit
