The weather has been fun recently, hasn’t it?

Everything Is Illuminated by Jonathan Safan Foer was a quirky epistolary that captured the relationship between an American-Jewish tourist and the Ukrainian tour guide who was helping him discover/uncover his family roots. It was violent and vulgar and vulnerable. I enjoyed it immensely and can imagine Tarantino making it into a cinematic masterpiece.
One idea that stood out was the tendency we humans have of being our own worst enemy. We choose paths that cause pain—pain that is not due to sweet sacrifice for making the world better. Rather, pain that results from inner turmoil, from knowing you are betraying yourself and your values. “We all choose things, and we also all choose against things. I want to be the kind of person who chooses for more than he chooses against, but like Safran, and like you, I discover myself this time and the next time against what I am certain is good and correct, and against what I am certain is worthy. I choose that I will not instead of that I will.”

On April 5th, I had what I hope will be the last surgery I ever need. Six weeks of rehab means I am not lifting weights, but lots of body movement and walking. Fortunately the flowers are blooming and street art abounds.

Peace and love,
